‘Heavenly Bodies’ by Otahuhu College: Winner of the iTICKET Award for Best Production of 2017.

Otahuhu College’s ‘Heavenly Bodies’ was awarded the prestigious iTICKET Showdown Award for Best Production for Auckland Secondary Schools. Billed as the biggest secondary school performing arts competition in New Zealand, this year’s competition featured 28 schools and over 30 productions. The awards ceremony took place last Thursday night on October the 26th at the Sky City Theatre.
‘Heavenly Bodies’ was described as a show where all the elements worked together to create a truly memorable piece of theatre. It was a production where strong individual performances and creative, well-executed technical design brought the story and vision to life. Heavenly Bodies’ performed by Otahuhu College left vivid memories of scenes, characters and moments in the minds of its audience for weeks, months and even perhaps years to come.

‘Heavenly Bodies’ was written by Otahuhu College Drama Teacher, Kerry Lynch and featured a creative team of staff and students for the music, costumes, set and lighting design. The production is a modern love story set in New Zealand that alludes to both Greek and Elizabethan theatre. The production was a comical and thought provoking commentary on love, the relationship between the arts and the sciences and what it means to be human. The play also featured classic New Zealand loves songs that are performed by the Fates.
In 2015 Otahuhu College’s last production, ‘Dream Seer’ also won the iticket Showdown award for the best production (play or musical) in Auckland. 34 school productions were considered for this esteemed award. With Otahuhu College having won in 2015 and 2017 the 2019 production will be well worth waiting for.
