Not every Kiwi kid gets the same chance
A child in New Zealand who grows up in a low-income household has all the odds stacked against them. In fact, out of all the developed countries in the world, New Zealand has one of the strongest links between household income and educational outcomes.
About us
Teach First NZ Ako Mātātupu is an innovative not-for-profit organisation that engages New Zealand’s future leaders in tackling one of our country’s most pressing challenges – educational inequality. We do this by developing outstanding graduates and professionals into highly effective teachers and inspirational leaders.
We believe two things can make a big difference to educational inequality. Great teachers working to raise aspiration and achievement in high-need classrooms; and leaders at all levels of our society, equipped with the skills to affect large-scale change. The Teach First NZ programme aims to deliver on both.
The opportunity
Our programme offers carefully selected participants the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on a school community and inspire future generations while working as a secondary teacher in a school serving a low socio-economic area for two-years.
The Teach First NZ programme is a big challenge and with challenge comes big rewards – not only will you be supported to achieve outstanding results in your classroom, a full salary and a full scholarship towards the study element of the programme, we will also help you to realise how you can use your experiences to have an even bigger impact after the programme, whether you choose to lead in education, business, government, the community or the not-for-profit sector.
About you
To be successful in helping your students realise their full potential – you’ll need to be someone with bright ideas, gritty determination, strong relationship building skills and a desire to make a real difference. You’ll be someone who combines a strong work ethic and self-discipline with warmth, empathy and humility and you will also have to be someone who is very resilient.
