Otahuhu Students make Olympic Team- Biology that is.
Tuesday, 26 September 2017

Four students from Otahuhu College have been selected for the next stage in the Bio Olympiad.
In week 5 of this term, a small group of Year 12 and 13 students took part in a competitive national exam for entry to the New Zealand International Biology Olympiad. The examination is aimed at Year 12 and 13 students with an interest in Biology and who would like to be considered for selection for the New Zealand Olympiad team. Less than 150 students across NZ, who have shown outstanding ability in this exam, are awarded a Bronze certificate and then invited to participate in an online tutorial programme leading to the next stage in selection – an exam in February 2018 for a Silver certificate. To have four students chosen for this next stage is a reflection of the student’s drive and ambition and the excellent classroom teaching and experiences available at Otahuhu College.
This is the first time Otahuhu College has ever participated and we have had four students awarded a Bronze certificate. They will move on to access the tutorial programme which supports students to develop a greater depth of understanding of biology in general and the IBO syllabus in particular. The syllabus is set at university level and is academically challenging.
The selected Otahuhu College students are: Amanda Heffernan, Shaneel Lal, Lucy-Kellie Emery and Catherine Mafi
